Police: Car fire at East 55th Marina leaves driver dead, Cleveland Metroparks officer injured

A Metroparks spokesperson tells 3News police pulled the car over for allegedly driving without headlights.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland Metroparks says one person is dead and one of its police officers was injured after a car caught fire near the East 55th Street Marina Monday night.

A Metroparks spokesperson tells 3News police pulled the car over for allegedly driving without headlights and, after being stopped, the vehicle burst into flames. 

Both the officer as well as the car's driver were hurt and taken to MetroHealth Medical Center.

3News has since learned the driver died at the hospital, while the officer was treated for minor burns and released. 

In a police report obtained by 3News, officials say the driver suffered burns on over 90% of his body. 

It is not yet clear what started the fire.
