Cleveland Neighborhood Safety Fund spreads $1 million across 14 violence prevention organizations

The funding prioritizes organizations in the Buckeye-Woodland, Central, Kinsman/Union Miles, Mt. Pleasant and St. Clair Superior neighborhoods.

CLEVELAND — The city of Cleveland has announced this year's round of grant funding awarded by a neighborhood safety fund overseen by the city, Cleveland City Council and the Cleveland Foundation.

The Cleveland Neighborhood Safety Fund will allocate a total of $1 million across 14 nonprofit organizations that work to mentor youth and interrupt and prevent violence. The funding prioritizes organizations in the Buckeye-Woodland, Central, Kinsman/Union Miles, Mt. Pleasant and St. Clair Superior neighborhoods.

“The Neighborhood Safety Fund is critical for our comprehensive, cross-sector focus to improve public safety in Cleveland,” said Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb. “Recipient organizations are working closely with each other and neighbors on programs to prevent violence and ultimately create safer communities and streets.”

The city says the Neighborhood Safety Fund, which was co-created by the three entities last year, looked at police data, health indicators and recent violent crime trends to find the target neighborhoods where funding was prioritized.

The latest round of funding comes in support of Mayor Justin Bibb's summer safety plan that his administration rolled out in May.

“This round of support comes at an ideal time as organizations are working to ensure that residents have a safe summer in Cleveland,” said Cleveland City Council President Blaine A. Griffin. “The committee has taken a data-driven approach to identify the organizations and programs that are helping address the root cause of violence as it continues to foster an ecosystem of violence prevention across the city.”
