CLEVELAND — Cleveland police are investigating a shooting that took place near St. Malachi Parish on Monday night.
3News was on the scene as Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy "Annie" Todd spoke to the media just hours after the incident took place.
Here is what she was able to confirm:
The shooting took place around 6 p.m. The number of people involved in the shooting is not known at this time, but they have detained a "person of interest" they think may have been involved. At least one other person is also being sought.
Three people sustained injuries as a result of the shooting, including the person of interest. Those injuries are considered to be non-life-threatening.
Police took the person of interest into custody near the Greater Cleveland Aquarium. During the detainment, a handgun was recovered. The other two were taken to nearby hospitals for evaluation.
The person of interest has since been identified as 35-year-old Richo Samuels, with Cleveland Municipal Court documents accusing him of shooting a man in the left arm while the victim sat in a car neat St. Malachi. Samuels faces a charge of felonious assault.
Police said they do not believe that St. Malachi was a target in the shooting. There were at least 120-125 people inside St. Malachi at the time of the shooting as the church hosted its weekly meal for those in need, and those in the building barricaded themselves inside during what they believed was an active shooter situation.
3News reporters spoke with one of the organizers of Monday night's event at St. Malachi whose car was damaged in the shooting. Multiple vehicles parked at St. Malachi sustained damage in the form of bullet holes and flat tires.
The incident is currently under investigation.
