Cleveland police officer fired after testing positive for drugs, receiving OVI while on duty

The incident occurred in 2018.

CLEVELAND — A Cleveland police officer has been fired after testing positive for drugs and receiving an OVI while on duty, according to a press released from the city Monday.

An internal investigation led to the firing of James Hummell following an August of 2018 incident.

Hummell was randomly selected for a drug test and found in violation of the CPD manual of rules. While being screened, he also was in possession of a loaded firearm.

Prior to his termination, Hummel was placed on restricted duty pending the outcome of the investigation. Hummell entered a plea of "no contest" to the drug testing charge and "not guilty" to the OVI charge.

The incident was handled by the Internal Affairs Unit and the findings were presented to Chief of Police, Calvin Williams, for review and later given to the Office of the Director of Public Safety for final discipline.

Hummel was hired to the force in May of 2001. Most recently he had been assigned to basic patrol in the Second District.
