CLEVELAND - A suspect is in custody after a Cleveland police officer was shot multiple times early Saturday morning.
According to authorities, the shooting occurred at 4:16 a.m. in the area around East 121st St. and Cromwell Ave. in the Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. As officers arrived at the scene after getting a report of a male shot, a suspect began firing what officials believe to be an assault rifle, and one of the officers was hit in both legs.
After the officer was taken from the scene by EMS crews, police located the original victim shot in a vehicle. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Jonathan A. Chambers, was later arrested by the Gang Impact unit. Record show a lengthy criminal history for Chambers, including guilty pleas for assault, drug, and weapons charges.
The officer underwent surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and is currently in stable condition. The condition of the other victim, who was also taken to UH, is not known at this time.
The incident remains under investigation.
