Busy weekend in downtown Cleveland: Police share traffic closures, safety reminders

Here's what you need to know as two major events are set to take place simultaneously in downtown Cleveland this weekend.

CLEVELAND — With Juneteenth festivities in downtown Cleveland set to take place concurrently with The Rolling Stones' much-anticipated concert at Browns Stadium, Cleveland police issued road closures and safety reminders for this weekend.

The MetroHealth Cleveland Juneteenth Freedom Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Mall C on Saturday, while doors at Browns Stadium will open at 6 p.m. with the concert starting at 8 p.m. 

"As part of the summer safety plan, the City of Cleveland and the Division of police is committed to making the safety of residents and visitors our top priority," the police department said in a news release. "Officers will be on hand to ensure safe and fun events for all who attend."

Here's what you need to know if you're heading downtown this weekend.

Road closures

Throughout the entirety of the Juneteenth festival, Lakeside Avenue will be closed between West Mall Drive and East Mall Drive. 

To facilitate the Rolling Stones show, the following roads will be closed: 

  • West 3rd Street and Summit Avenue northbound: Closed beginning at 4 p.m.
  • East 9th Street at Lakeside Avenue, East 9th Street exits and entrances from Route 2: Closed beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Police say other road closures may be announced as necessary. 

Parking 

Parking restrictions are in effect in downtown Cleveland. Police remind the public to look out for signs attached to posts, poles and parking meters to avoid violating restrictions and being ticketed or having their car towed. Vehicles in violation of parking restrictions will be taken to the One Stop Vehicle Impound Center at 3040 Quigley Rd. 

Willard Garage will be open for parking, and the Municipal Lot will open at 3 p.m. Muni Lot parking costs $40 per space, and no large vehicles such as RVs or buses will be allowed in before the lot opens. 

Here are the rules and regulations for parking in the Muni Lot: 

  1. No flying of drones in the muni-lot or within 5 miles of Burke 
  2. No open pit fires 
  3. Propane grills only (No charcoal) 
  4. No alcohol 
  5. Saving spaces is prohibited 
  6. You will be charged for all parking spaces that you occupy 
  7. No in/out privileges 
  8. All litter must be dispensed in trash containers 
  9. Vandalism of any type will not be tolerated 
  10. Crossing the Shoreway is prohibited 
  11. No private latrines 
  12. Lanes must remain clear of activity at all times

Other reminders

Police remind anyone who plans to consume alcohol to plan for a designated driver. 

Portable restrooms, trash cans and dumpsters will be available on site, police say.
