CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Police Department is paying tribute to those “who made the supreme sacrifice” as 2023 Police Week continues.
Thursday's events included the Cleveland Police Badge Case Ceremony, which we streamed live in the video below. It's a ceremony used to memorialize fallen officers by enshrining their badge in the department's monument.
Among those who spoke at the ceremony was the mother of fallen Cleveland police officer David Fahey, who was killed in the line of duty in January 2017.
You can watch her comments in the video at the top of this story.
During Thursday's ceremony, Cleveland Police Chief Wayne Drummond offered the following statement:
Here is more from the Badge Case Ceremony:
Friday morning marks the return of the annual parade, which steps off from Lakeside Avenue and East 12th Street in downtown Cleveland at 10:30 a.m. The parade will then continue along Lakeside Avenue for several blocks.
“Parade participants include officers from local, county, state and federal agencies throughout the U.S. and Canada, and surviving family members of officers who made the supreme sacrifice,” according to the event schedule.
A memorial service follows immediately after the parade at 11:30 a.m. from Police Memorial Square (Huntington Park).
"When a law enforcement officer dies in the line of duty, the loss reverberates throughout the community," the Greater Cleveland Peace Officers Memorial Society states on their site. "The family loses a beloved member, the law enforcement agency loses a respected colleague and the community loses the services of an officer dedicated to its protection."
The Memorial Society was first established in 1985.
"The Police Memorial Society keeps the promise of its founders by honoring the service of fallen officers to ensure they are not forgotten, and by providing assistance and emotional support to their families and friends."
