16-year-old boy shot in head: Cleveland police say 1 person detained

Authorities say the shooting happened in the 5100 block of Stickney Avenue, which is near James Ford Rhodes High School.

CLEVELAND — A 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital early Monday after being shot in the head, according to the Cleveland Police Department.

Authorities say the shooting happened in the 5100 block of Stickney Avenue, which is near James Ford Rhodes High School.

The boy was in critical condition at the time he was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center, according to an official with Cleveland EMS. One male was also detained, but police did not elaborate.

3News had a camera at the scene where a large police presence was seen investigating the situation.

Parents in the community are on edge, especially as the new school year begins. They received an automated message that Rhodes High School was going into lockdown.

"When it came on, it said 'this is a message from college and career,' it's the principal talking and she said 'let me start by saying your children are actively safe in the school," parent Kishana Ferguson said.

While parents were worried on the outside, students were upset and crying during the traumatic morning.

"I did not really feel safe that much because I don't trust anything that goes on here," student Joshua Hines told 3News. "Things are relatively up and down."

Hines says the 16-year-old victim is a student at Rhodes.

"He is friends with several of the people that I hang out with, which is why I spent most of my day consoling my friends."

The shooting is leaving parents thinking about what's next.

"Bullets don't have eyes or names," Ferguson added. "It's a lot. It's a lot for me to go home and think about."

No additional details were immediately available.
