What goes into the nightly lightings of Cleveland's Terminal Tower?

The hundreds of LED lights atop the city landmark bring attention to charities, events, holidays, and sports teams through vibrant color.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Since 1927, Terminal Tower has graced the Cleveland skyline. It looks great during the day, but after dark? Beautiful.

"It is the coolest thing I believe that I've ever done," Aaron Price says.

Price is lighting co-director and social media guru for K&D Management, the owner of the old tower. Bringing color to the night sky is a process that starts at kandd.com.

"You can go and submit an application to light up for," Price explained, "whether it's for your charitable event, maybe it's an awareness month or awareness week, or a holiday."

Price says the applications get reviewed and are approved or denied based on their criteria. If approved, the lighting is put on their schedule.

The tower gets saturated with color from hundreds of LED lights. The other lighting co-director, Matt Rinker, designs the light shows.

"K&D totally did and overhaul — I think there are around 540 fixtures on the tower," Rinker said of the renovations that took place more than a decade ago. "Everything's done mobile. We can change the lights with our phones."

The lights not only add beauty to the Cleveland skyline, but also shed colorful light on important causes.

"It allows us to link in these charities who may be helping people on the ground," Price said. "For us, it is very important."

Rinker agrees.

"It really commands your attention," he admitted. "Coming downtown from east, west, by car, by air, it's a glowing beacon in the sky."

Shine on, Terminal Tower. Shine on.
