Turnpike crash survivor marries fiancée at MetroHealth

Scott, who was nearly killed in a horrific crash, immediately proposed to Sarah when he woke from surgery.

CLEVELAND — Scott Vanness survived a serious crash on the Ohio Turnpike earlier this month.

The 32-year-old was crushed between two semi trucks, leaving him in critical condition and in need of surgery at MetroHealth Medical Center. His doctors told his fiancée, Sarah Barclay, that he may not survive his injuries.

Sarah, 29, and her mother drove from their hometown of Ypsilanti, Michigan to Cleveland immediately. When Scott woke from surgery, the first words out of his mouth upon seeing Sarah were, "Marry me."

Sarah said yes, and the couple said their vows Friday inside a lounge at MetroHealth's Trauma Unit. Sarah's mother drove the couple's two children from Michigan to attend the wedding, while members of MetroHealth’s Trauma Resource Center were also there.

The couple says they'd had previous intentions to get married, but their plans always fell through. Now, they say the time was right, and Sarah says she wouldn't mind wearing jeans on her wedding day, though she actually wore a MetroHealth trauma survivors shirt over a white bridal dress.
