It appears Cleveland's venerable May Company building at Public Square will have new life in the future.
On Thursday, the Cleveland Landmarks Commission gave approval to Bedrock to renovate May Company into an apartment complex with the goal of re-opening by 2020
Bedrock is Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert's Detroit-based real-estate development company. It bought the aging May Company building in 2017 for $12 million dollars.
The plans presented by Bedrock call for 308 apartment suites with 519 parking spaces. Retail and entertainment usage will be a part of both the top and bottom floors of the building. The top floor will have an outdoor green-space for residents plus a bar or restaurant with an outdoor patio for the public.

Plans call for the parking spots to be in the basement and in floors 2-5.
The May Company opened in 1915 and during its heyday was the third largest department store in the United States with 800,000 square feet of space. The store closed for good in 1993.
This will be Gilbert's second department store renovation in downtown Cleveland. He previously turned the Higbee building into Jack Cleveland Casino.
