Police say the girl was stabbed by another student.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A 13-year-old girl was taken to the hospital Thursday morning after Cleveland police say she was stabbed in the neck by another student at Holy Name Elementary in the 8300 block of Broadway Avenue.

EMS crews also told 3News the teen was taken from the scene to MetroHealth Medical Center in serious condition.

3News received the following statement on the stabbing from an official at Holy Name Elementary:

Administrators at Holy Name Elementary School in Cleveland and Cleveland Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an apparent altercation in the school building this morning between an 8th grade student and a 5th grade student that led to the 8th grader suffering a stab wound to the chin and neck.

The 8th grade student was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The 5th grade student was taken into police custody.

Altercations between students are not tolerated at Holy Name Elementary School. Holy Name administrators will cooperate with the Cleveland Police in investigating this matter and appropriate disciplinary action will be taken once the school has completed its investigation.
