CLEVELAND — The Coalition to Stop the Inhumanity at the Cuyahoga County Jail was among several organizations joining together in a Tuesday morning rally that includes a march to the Justice Center.
The group began their demonstration at 8 a.m. in Public Square before marching together through the streets of Cleveland to the Justice Center.
“All of our elected officials are accountable for the ongoing crisis at the jail and responsible for solving it,” organizers said in a press release.
“Today we call on County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley – who has the power to make prosecutorial reforms that will reduce the number of people who are unnecessarily locked up at the jail and make our county criminal injustice system more just – to take leadership and take action,” organizers said.
The Coalition outlined the following demands they have of Prosecutor Michael O’Malley:
- Institute comprehensive and regular training for prosecutors around his new felony 4s and 5s cash bail policy.
- Cease using law enforcement officers with a documented history of lying in the prosecution.
- Include drug-related offenses in the prosecutor pretrial.
- Meet with representatives of the Coalition to Stop the Inhumanity at the Cuyahoga County Jail, the Juvenile Justice Coalition and other stakeholders to address the following: Reducing the number of juveniles bound over to adult court; monitoring and enforcement of compliance with Brady obligations.
Their chants included:
- "What do want? Jail reform! When do we want it? Now!"
- "No prisoners, no detainees. Stop this killing industry."
- "Hey hey! Ho ho! Armond Budish got to go!"
- "End money bail! We want justice at the jail!"
