CLEVELAND — Friday's scheduled high school football game between Woodmore and John Adams in Cleveland was canceled after a gunshot was fired just off campus, according to a social media post from Woodmore Local Schools in Sandusky County.
Woodmore Superintendent Dr. Mary Schaeffer wrote that the district's team was informed of the situation as they arrived at John Adams College and Career Academy on Martin Luther King Junior Drive. Principal Brian Evans stated that a gun went off during a fight between two students "at the perimeter of the campus," with police quickly working to secure the area. No injuries have been reported.
Once law enforcement cleared the scene, Woodmore students and staffers went back to their bus and headed back to Greater Toledo, arriving home sometime after 6:15 p.m. The game between the Wildcats and Rebels, which had been scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m., was called off and is not expected to be made up.
"The safety and security of our students is our top priority," Schaeffer said, adding that a second bus carrying Woodmore cheerleaders never arrived at John Adams and was diverted back to Sandusky County. "We are grateful for the quick actions of law enforcement., our football coaches and the home school administrative team."
Per Schaeffer, counselors and administrators will meet with Woodmore football players on Monday. 3News has reached out to both the Cleveland Division of Police and Cleveland Metropolitan School District for more information.
As of now, John Adams is scheduled to host Lincoln West next Friday at 4 p.m.
