East Tech student arrested after allegedly firing gun outside Cleveland high school

Officials say the incident involved one current and one former student in front of the building. No injuries were reported.

CLEVELAND — Cleveland's East Technical High School was placed under a "code red" lockdown Tuesday afternoon after officials say a student fired a gun amid an altercation during dismissal.

According to the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, the incident involved the teen as well as a former student in front of the building. A single gunshot went off, and the student was arrested by Cleveland police. The former student fled the area and is currently being sought by authorities.

East Tech was locked down in the wake of the shooting, but that has since been lifted and students have been dismissed. In addition, CMSD says security measures were increased at several nearby schools out of an abundance of caution.

The shooting occurred just three days after a pair of suspected arson fires inside and around the East Tech gymnasium. Officials have not indicated that the two incidents are connected.

Law enforcement is still investigating the shooting.
