CLEVELAND — Officials confirm a man is dead after he drowned in the waters of Lake Erie off Edgewater Park Wednesday evening.
According to the Cleveland Division of Fire, witnesses reported the man had gone into the water to cool off on what had been a hot and humid day, but he was not able to safely make it back to shore. Members of the department's dive team assisted in searching for the individual and attempting to rescue him, but eventually, another diver from Cleveland Metroparks police located his body in the lake north of the fishing pier.
The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Jeremie Byringiro of Cleveland.
The search occurred prior to the arrival of severe thunderstorms in the Cleveland area Wednesday night.
Additionally, authorities say another man was reported to have gone into the water near Edgewater Beach in an unrelated incident. The person was located on shore and taken to a local hospital.
The Metroparks says an investigation is currently underway.
EDITOR'S NOTE: An earlier version of this story stated the deceased victim had drowned near the beach. Metroparks officials have since clarified there were two separate incidents, and that the fatality occurred near the pier to the east of the beach.
