More than 54 million Americans will hit the road or fly the friendly skies this Thanksgiving, according to AAA.
Those 54 million are expected to venture more than 50 miles from home for the holiday, the most since 2005.
Of those travelers, 48.5 million will drive. That means more traffic, congestion and time spent on the roads.
AAA says the worst congestion on the roads is expected during the early evening commute this week. The best days to travel are Thanksgiving Day, Friday and Saturday.
As far as gas prices go, AAA says motorists should expect to pay up, with prices sitting the highest in four years at a $2.75 national average.
AAA says 9.15 million will travel within its East North Central District, which consists of Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. An estimate of 752,000 will fly, a 6.3 percent spike from last year.
Cleveland Hopkins Airport says it expects more than 280,000 travelers between Nov. 17-25, marking the biggest travel period in more than a decade at the airport.
The airport says its two busiest days are the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday following. Thanksgiving itself is typically the least busy travel day of the week, according to AAA.
Passengers should anticipate longer lines and are encouraged to arrive at least two hours ahead of departure. The airport says it has added more staff and security personnel for the holidays.
Many travelers are looking to escape the cold this holiday, with many of the top travel destinations being in warm weather spots. The top 10 Thanksgiving destinations, according to AAA, are:
1. Orlando, Florida
2. New York, New York
3. Anaheim, California
4. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
5. Las Vegas, Nevada
6. Cancun, Mexico
7. Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas
8. Honolulu, Hawaii
