National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado in Cleveland: See the storm's path

Weather officials say the tornado began at 11:59 p.m. and ended three minutes later after traveling 0.79 miles.

CLEVELAND — The National Weather Service has confirmed an EF-1 tornado with estimated peak winds of 110 mph happened during overnight storms in Cleveland.

Here is how the National Weather Service details the Cleveland tornado in their “survey summary”:

An EF-1 tornado has been confirmed beginning near East 71st Street and Chester Avenue, ending near East 89th Street and Euclid Avenue. Extensive tree damage occurred along the path with some homes receiving minor damage. Calvary Church received extensive roof damage. Multiple light poles were bent near the base in the shopping center on East 79th Street and at the intersection of East 89th and Euclid Avenue.

Earlier Friday morning, 3News' Austin Love reported from the church where debris was seen scattered nearby in the roadway.

“Extensive tree damage was reported along with damage to buildings,” NWS Cleveland posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The National Weather Service also included a map (see below) of the tornado’s path, showing it stretched 0.79 miles diagonally from near Chester Avenue to Euclid Avenue. Its max width was 150 yards, according to the NWS report.

Weather officials say the tornado began at 11:59 p.m. and ended three minutes later.

There were no injuries or deaths associated with the tornado, according to NWS.

For context, here is how the Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes:

  • EF-0: Weak......65 to 85 mph
  • EF-1: Weak......86 to 110 mph
  • EF-2: Strong....111 to 135 mph
  • EF-3: Strong....136 to 165 mph
  • EF-4: Violent...166 to 200 mph
  • EF-5: Violent...>200 mph

The overnight storms resulted in widespread power outages throughout Northeast Ohio amid reports of downed trees and power lines.
