Portion of I-90 to be renamed for fallen Cleveland firefighter Johnny Tetrick, Gov. Mike DeWine to sign bill Friday

Tetrick died in the line of duty on Nov. 19, 2022, when he was hit by a car on the highway while assisting at the scene of an earlier crash.

CLEVELAND — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine will help honor a Cleveland hero Friday when he officially signs a bill to name a portion of Interstate 90 after fallen firefighter Johnny Tetrick.

Tetrick died in the line of duty on Nov. 19, 2022, when he was hit by a car driving illegally around traffic and barriers on the highway while assisting at the scene of an earlier crash. The driver of said vehicle, Leander Bissell, is currently serving a prison sentence of at least 16 years for Tetrick's murder.

Last month, the Ohio General Assembly unanimously passed House Bill 107, which will designate the stretch of I-90 between East 72nd Street and East 105th where Tetrick was killed as "Cleveland Firefighter Johnny Tetrick Memorial Highway." The legislation was sponsored by state Rep. Tom Patton (R- Strongsville).

DeWine will sign the bill into law during a ceremony Friday at 1:30 p.m. from Cleveland Fire Station 22, Tetrick's former firehouse. He will be joined by Patton and Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb, among others.
