Operation S.T.O.P upends illegal street riding in Cleveland over the weekend

The initiative led to 35 traffic citations, 4 parking citations, 10 autos towed, 1 ATV towed, 3 handguns seized and 5 arrests.

CLEVELAND — Editor's note: The video above is from a previous story about the City of Cleveland increasing fines for off road stunt driving on city streets.

Operation S.T.O.P. (Stop Street Takeovers Permanently) was conducted on Saturday July 30 in an effort to take down the practice of illegal riding and racing on the streets of Cleveland.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., officers attempted to intercept a group of vehicles that gathered in a parking lot in the area of West 65th Street and Denison Avenue. As the officers arrived to the scene, the vehicles dispersed. Officers in conjunction with the Aviation Unit were able to follow the vehicles towards the east side of the city. 

As a result of the initiative, Operation S.T.O.P. yielded the following results: 

  • 35 traffic citations
  • 4 parking citations
  • 10 autos towed
  • 1 ATV towed
  • 3 handguns seized
  • 5 arrests ( 1 improper handling of a firearm/traffic warrants, 3 felony warrants, 1 Carrying Concealed Weapons)

Resources used in Operation S.T.O.P on Saturday included the Patrol Section, the Bureau of Traffic, the Gang Impact Unit, the Aviation Unit and the Real Time Crime Center.

Cleveland Police ask that anyone with information that will help thwart cases related to Operation S.T.O.P to report the illegal or suspicious activity. Use 9-1-1 in case of an emergency, for all non-emergencies use 216-621-1234.
