CLEVELAND — It's been two years since Cleveland Police officer Shane Bartek was tragically shot and killed during a carjacking.
"As we're making new year's resolutions on Jan. 1, Shane Bartek's family was planning a funeral and having to bury Officer Bartek," said Jason Salupo.
Salupo is the owner and operator of West Park Station restaurant and bar. On Friday the location donated 10 percent of sales to the West Park Cleveland Police and Fire Fighters Memorial in Bartek's honor.
"Its to just kind of again put it at the forefront and recognize that these guys are putting their lives on the line every time they walk out the door," Salupo said.
The cause is close to Salupo's heart, his dad was a Cleveland police officer for over four decades.
"Our memorial here was inspired by my dads partner who was killed in the 70s and it kind of grew from there," Salupo said.
Bartek's tragic death still shaking the West Park community, where many first responders call home.
"There's no secret that this community is home to many police and fire and public servants, so the fact that it even happened in our backyard so to speak is even more impactful," said Cindy Eschweiler.
Eschweiler is a Brooklyn police officer and said the loss still weighs heavy, with many officers feeling like it could have easily been them.
"Even though I never knew Shane personally, when you take on this role and you wear this badge you become a member of a larger family," Eschweiler said.
