Repairs begin on Cleveland Hopkins Airport Smart Parking Garage

Crews are working to execute a more permanent fix.

CLEVELAND — The Smart Parking Garage at Cleveland Hopkins Airport is officially under repair.

It's a project that unexpectedly came about in late October; emergency supports were added as a precaution and engineers were called in to access the garages condition.

"I wouldn't be standing here. I wouldn't let anyone park here if it was a major concern,"  Airport Director Robert Kennedy told 3News' Brandon Simmons at the time damage was initially reported.

The airport originally told 3News that there were just some "minor repairs" that needed to be done. Turns out, that's not the whole story.

According to the airport, problems were discovered when an outside construction firm Thomarios (which has extensive experience in parking structures) was called in to make some improvements on the garage's expansion joints. Expansion joints are designed to allow movement in each section of the garage, but the movement in one area is not right: The cement around it is crumbling, the entire section appears to be sagging, and you can see rebar showing through.

Fast forward to Monday, workers were on site hoping to create a more permanent fix.

Additional parking spaces have been roped off while crews are working to replace rebar and crumbling cement on the top level of the garage.

According to the City, the expected completion date for the project is November 27.

3News is still waiting to receive the final report from the engineers that began this process in late October. 3News has submitted a second request.
