But on Tuesday, Nov. 3, the home of the Cleveland Cavaliers will serve a different purpose, with the City of Cleveland, Cuyahoga County and the Board of Elections in partnership with the Cleveland Cavaliers announcing that Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will serve as a polling location for the 2020 General Election.
According to a release, only registered voters residing in precincts I, L and Q in Cleveland’s Ward 3 will be able to cast their in-person ballot at the FieldHouse, per the local designated voting location rules. A full precinct locator can be found here.
With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic requiring measures such as physical distancing and the use of masks or face coverings, Rocket Mortgage Field House makes for an ideal location for such an event. In 2019, the building formerly known as Quicken Loans Arena finished a two-year, $185 million renovation, which expanded the size of the facility from 95,380 square feet to 152,970.
In addition to polling for the 2020 General Election, Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will also host the non-partisan National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Sept. 22. The event will be open to voters residing anywhere in Cuyahoga County, who will be able to register to vote at the FieldHouse that day, regardless of their precinct or polling locations.
"The Cavaliers organization has a long-standing record of supporting voter registration initiatives and promotions," a release reads. "Every year millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day was first observed in 2012 to educate and create awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach voters who may not register otherwise."
