CLEVELAND — The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority confirms an individual was struck and killed by one of its trains Monday afternoon in Cleveland's West Park area.

According to the RTA, the incident occurred around 3 p.m. between the Triskett and West Park stations in the Jefferson neighborhood. A westbound Red Line Rapid train hit an individual on the tracks, and the person was pronounced dead minutes later.

The victim's identity is not known at this time. With the railcar stopped at the scene, Transit police escorted 21 passengers from the area to West Park. The Red Line is also currently closed on that stretch of track, per officials, with RTA 66R buses replacing all east and westbound trains between Puritas and West Boulevard-Cudell until further notice.

"Passenger and rail safety continue to be a priority of our operations; we will continue to provide updates as available," the RTA said in a statement. Transit police are investigating the matter.
