CLEVELAND — 3News Managing Editor and Anchor Russ Mitchell was honored Wednesday at the 30th Annual Cleveland Association of Broadcasters Awards, which recognizes those who have made "a substantial contribution to the growth and success of the broadcast industry in Cleveland and nationwide."
Mitchell, a former anchor for CBS Evening News, joined WKYC in January 2012 and has covered many major headlines out of Northeast Ohio throughout the the past 10 years, including the shooting at Chardon High School and the escape of Gina DeJesus, Amanda Berry and Michelle Knight.
In his time with CBS, the What's Next anchor reported alongside Dan Rather in New York on Sept. 11, 2001, traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo, Cuba, India and more, and covered the capture and death of Osama bin Laden in 2011.
Mitchell has been in "the biz" before he even left high school. Prior to attending the University of Missouri, at just 17, he worked as a switchboard operator for KTVI in his hometown of St. Louis. After graduating, Mitchell moved to Kansas City and began reporting for KMBC.
Along with this latest prestigious award, Russ has received both local and national Emmys, the National Association of Black Journalists Award, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award, the New York Association of Black Journalists Award for Best Documentary, and the Press Club of St. Louis 18th Annual Media Person of the Year Award.
