Sgt. Freddy Diaz, public information officer with Cleveland police, says people should feel protected and safe downtown, but also do their part as community members.

"If you do see something, say something ... quick call to either 911 or the non-emergency number 621-1234 goes a long way. So, provide that information, notify an officer or that someone that's in the area or whatever. And, we hope that we have no issues, but we're always prepared to make sure that we keep our community safe," Diaz said.

The City of Cleveland also announced parking restrictions and road closures. They are as follows:

ROAD CLOSURE:

  • East 24th to East 18th on Superior Avenue
  • Closed on block north and south of Superior from 1:30 p.m.-6 p.m.

PARKING RESTRICTION:

  • Superior Avenue from East 24th to West 3rd
  • Starting at 9 a.m.

"The very first Parade that we know about in Cleveland was organized in 1842 by the city’s third resident Catholic priest, Rev. Peter McLaughlin," according to the parade's site. "Fr. McLaughlin was a proponent of 'temperance,' or abstinence from alcohol, and his St. Patrick’s Day celebration began with mass at St. Mary’s on the Flats -- the only Catholic church in Cleveland’s city limits at that time -- continued with a Parade of the Catholic Temperance Society, and concluded with a banquet attended by friends and family members."

Cleveland won't be the only Northeast Ohio city hosting a parade this year. The Ancient Order of Hibernians will host a St. Patrick's Day parade on Saturday, March 9, in downtown Akron. The parade is scheduled to step off at noon.
