CLEVELAND — University Circle police confirm they are investigating what is being called "a small explosion of some sort" in Cleveland's Wade Oval Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities say the incident involved an empty vehicle, with cameras catching smoke coming out of the car around 3:45 p.m. While no one was hurt and the blast was contained to the vehicle (which only sustained minor damage), it was loud enough for people to hear it and call 911.
Roads around the area were shut down for hours. Officials are still working to gather information, with Cleveland's bomb squad and Case Western Reserve University police assisting University Circle authorities.
According to University Circle Chief Tom Wetzel, the next week in Cleveland and in the eastern suburbs has all departments being extra vigilant -- especially with events like the Women's NCAA Final Four, the solar eclipse, the Guardians home opener and the Cleveland International Film Festival.
"Cleveland police and our department and Case are all going to be heavily staffed for all these events that are going on now," Wetzel told 3News of the plans in place. "There [were] a lot of people down here as we're prepping for this anyway."
