Following a number of mass shootings that have gained national attention, University Hospitals will hold a minute of silence as a part of "Hospitals Against Violence Day" on Friday, June 3.
The minute-long silence will take place on the lawn of the Lakeside Building on Adelbert Rd. at the UH Cleveland Medical Center at 11:40 a.m. ET, coinciding with the same time that an 18-year-old gunman entered an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, last week. The gunman proceeded to kill 19 students and two teachers before being killed by responding law enforcement.
The shooting in Uvalde came just a little more than a week after an 18-year-old shot and killed 10 Black people at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, in what is believed to be a racially motivated hate crime. The suspected gunman has been charged with first-degree murder.
On Wednesday, a 45-year-old gunman shot and killed four people in a hospital building in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It was later revealed that the gunman, who died via a self-inflicted gunshot wound, targeted a doctor who had previously performed surgery on him, killing the doctor, another doctor, a receptionist and a patient.
"As an organization, UH abhors hate and violence of any kind," UH said in a statement announcing the minute of silence. "It is working toward partnerships, innovations and creative thinking to foster peace and make a safer environment for caregivers and patients. It has developed violence prevention programs such as the Violence Interrupters program and Antifragility Initiative. UH has also expanded access to behavioral health through telemedicine and by integrating it into its primary care model and creating specialized behavioral health hubs that it plans to expand across the region."
