Vendors raise more concerns over West Side Market

A Facebook post about electrical concerns goes viral, shows DIY lighting done by employees at business

It’s not the leaky ceiling or the flooded basement from the summer.

This time, it’s a Facebook post about a makeshift lighting system for the display case built by employees at Kate’s Fish.

In the post, owners said they’ve written numerous service requests for lighting issues and they’ve had to resort to fixing the problem themselves with DIY lights that cause “electrical shock and a danger to all employees.”

It’s a setup the city did not approve.

Greg Shuck has been working at the market for two years, he’s the owner of Basketeria Organics and sits on the Tenants Association board.

"The electrical system is not built for the modern day and age and it has to be upgraded,” Greg Shuck, vendor, said.

Shuck says he believes the city is working to make the market better, but he also knows there has to be a process to safeguard money.

"We are at the will of the city and their assessments and they have to be diligent about the way they spend their funds,” Shuck said. “We have 178 stands I believe and all those need electrical updated and it can't be done individually, it has to be done all at once."

Some vendors have said it comes down to the same issue they continue to deal with – the lack of action by their landlord, the city of Cleveland.

After more than a year of waiting, they’re still asking: When will things change?

“We've seen upgrades to our boiler system, we are seeing the reports from the roof assessment, we just got brand new gutters on the arcade...so while it is a process, that process is moving along,” Shuck said.

The city of Cleveland released a statement in response to the Facebook post, that reads in part:

“The electrical set-up pictured in the Facebook post is not approved by the market because it does not adhere to proper electrical standards. It was installed by the vendor at will, along with other large equipment not intended for the stand’s electrical system.

From time to time, vendors require additional electrical power for their stands. The only requirement in these instances is for the vendor to submit a work plan, obtain permission and secure the proper permits. While this vendor did not take these steps, they’re welcome –at any time –to begin this process.”
