Cleveland Buried History Days: Events at 5 historic cemeteries

'We'll have a variety of events at five historic cemeteries including tours, hikes, presentations and even trick-or-treating in the cemetery. ...'

CLEVELAND — From veterans, to those who helped guide former slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad, some of the most influential people of Cleveland's past are at Woodland Cemetery.

"Who would think that we have so much history," said Woodland Cemetery Foundation President Michelle Day. "We've found baseball players -- especially with the Negro League -- would've never thought of that, women inventors and city of Cleveland mayors."

The more than 60 acres that make up Woodland Cemetery provide the final resting place for more than 80,000 residents, including Charles Bratenahl, founder and namesake of the city, and former Cleveland Mayor George Senter.

Volunteers work to restore the cemetery, which in the past 15 years has included rebuilding the gatehouse. They have also placed headstones on unmarked graves, including the graves of many soldiers, some of whom fought in the Civil War.

"I am the daughter of a Navy veteran so, that started my quest to make sure the veterans are noted for because in the cemetery records, they are not," said Day. "I took special exception to that and I want to make sure that they are all honored."

Woodland is one of five local cemeteries participating in the first Cleveland Buried History Days. Hosted by Canalway, It's a family friendly way to invite people not only to explore these beautiful locations but also hear the personal stories of Cleveland's past.

"We'll have a variety of events at five historic cemeteries including tours, hikes, presentations and even trick-or-treating in the cemetery so the whole family can participate," said Canalway Director of Communications Meghan Paynter.

Events begin on Thursday, Oct. 24 and run through Sunday, Oct. 27. More information can be found HERE.
