From the diamond to the ring: WWE Summerslam, Cleveland Guardians game draw massive downtown crowds

Between the two events, Cleveland's downtown stadiums welcomed a combined 95,042 people on Saturday night.

CLEVELAND — From wrestling to baseball, sports fans took over the streets of Cleveland on Saturday.

For the second straight day, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) continued to make the city of Cleveland its home. For the first time in nearly 30 years, the wrestling franchise hosted its Summerslam event at Cleveland Browns Stadium. A record-setting crowd of 57,791 wrestling fans showed up for the extravaganza.

“They always do it big. They always choose big arenas. It’s always a big match. It’s always going to be great,” said Henry Muller, a Summerslam fan.

Just a few blocks away, 37,251 fans rooted for the Guardians at Progressive Field as franchise legend CC Sabathia was honored as the newest member of Guardians Hall of Fame. The streets, full of fans and traffic, created some delays for sports enthusiasts.

“How long would it usually take you to get to the game? 20 minutes. Today, how long did it take you? About an hour,” said Linda Fleming, a Guardians fan.

Despite the setbacks, some fans said this weekend proved that Cleveland is more than just "the mistake by the lake."

“Enjoy everything Cleveland has to offer because we are bad, and we’re back. We are bad and back,” said Lisa Jackson, a Guardians fan.
