CLEVELAND -- The YMCA held its groundbreaking ceremony for the new downtown YMCA location Thursday morning.
The new location, expected to open in January 2016, is at The Galleria at Erieview, in what was formerly retail space.
The facility will be more than 40,000 square feet of premium health and wellness space, including a three-lane lap pool, sauna, steam room, state-of-the-art networked fitness equipment, a spinning studio, three group exercise studios (one of which is suited for hot yoga), two massage therapy rooms, and a modern lobby which will include a social gathering space.
The $8.9 million in construction costs for the new downtown Y will deliver increased tax revenue to the City of Cleveland.
YMCA said it will create 40 full-time equivalent Y jobs. The construction project itself is also expected to be a source of work for 100 additional people within the city.
