PARMA, Ohio — One person was hospitalized after an overnight fire at a Parma apartment complex.
According to the Parma Fire Department, at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Monday, crews responded to a fire at the Midtown Towers apartment complex on the 5600 block of Broadview Road.
As fire crews arrived at the scene, evacuating residents told them that a sixth floor apartment was on fire. They added that a man was seen exiting the apartment, closing the door behind him and exiting the building safely.
When firefighters made their way to the sixth floor, they found "heavy smoke conditions" in the hallway. Fire crews were able to extinguish the flames after entering the apartment. A search of neighboring units was conducted immediately after the fire was put out.
A resident who lived near the apartment where the fire took place was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
The Parma Fire Investigation Unit says indications are that the fire began in the kitchen. However, the investigation is still ongoing.
The Parma Fire Department was assisted by the Brooklyn Heights Fire Department, Independence Fire Department, North Royalton Fire Department, Brooklyn Fire Department, Middleburg Heights Fire Department, Brookpark Fire Department and Seven Hills Fire Department.
