EUCLID, Ohio — Wednesday marked a milestone for Amazon, and it happened in Northeast Ohio.
Amazon's fulfillment center in Euclid became the company's first in the U.S. to eliminate plastic delivery packaging. The move is part of Amazon's multiyear effort to convert its centers to paper, a transition that will allow many customers to recycle at home.
“This is a major milestone for our U.S. fulfillment centers, and I’m incredibly proud of the teams that developed new technologies to eliminate plastic packaging,” said Pat Lindner, VP of Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging at Amazon. “This is just the beginning, as we continue to discover more ways to eliminate and reduce plastic packaging for our customers.”
According to Amazon, several innovations were required to achieve the plastic-free milestone in Euclid:
- Rebuilding existing machines to use paper instead of plastic
- Creating durable and flexible paper packaging
- Improving made-to-fit technology
- Transitioning from plastic air pillows to paper filler

The company adds that their machines are able to create paper packaging solutions that also minimize excess space, without compromising product safety,
Amazon opened its 650,000 square-foot fulfillment center in Euclid in 2019 at the site of the former Euclid Square Mall.
