The incident began around 5:37 p.m. when a Bedford police officer saw a stolen vehicle pull into the parking lot of Walgreens on Broadway Avenue.

Police say the vehicle backed into a parking spot and a passenger exited from the back seat. The officer called for additional police units and attempted to block the vehicle in.

"As the officer attempted to get the driver to turn off the vehicle, he reported seeing the front seat passenger pulling a firearm from his waistband, and he fired two rounds at the vehicle as it pulled away," said Bedford police in a press release.

Police do not believe that anyone in the vehicle was struck by the shots, but the officer involved sustained a minor injury and was taken to a local hospital.

Bedford police say that the officer has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.

In addition, Bedford police noted that the officer's emergency lights were not activated, so his dashcam and bodycam did not activate.
