CLEVELAND — Cleveland Heights High School will be closed Friday after a student was found on campus with a loaded gun on Thursday, the head of the district's teachers union confirmed.

Cleveland Heights Teachers Union President Karen Rego told 3News the student was taken into police custody. Rego did not share any further information about the student.

According to Cathan Cavanaugh, supervisor of communications for the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District, Thursday marked the second incident involving students with loaded guns on school grounds this week. On Monday, a student was also arrested for possessing a loaded handgun after being searched by security personnel and the school's resource officer.

Rego said the high school will be closed for a "calamity day" so district officials can assess its security measures in light of the incidents. Cavanaugh told 3News the school will reopen on Monday with "supports in place for students and staff." All other district buildings will remain open.

According to Rego, the school has at least one metal detector, but it is unclear whether the metal detector was being used on Thursday. Cavanaugh said every student "will go through the metal detector search process during any searches that occur" beginning next week.

3News has reached out to Cleveland Heights police for more information about the incidents.
