CUYAHOGA COUNTY, Ohio — As Ohio continues to see an exponential rise in COVID-19 cases, the Cuyahoga County Public Library system has announced a change to operating procedures.
"With the dramatic rise in Covid-19 cases in our area, Cuyahoga County Public Library is taking steps to ensure we can continue to operate safely and with sufficient staffing," the library system said in a statement Sunday afternoon. "Starting Monday, December 27, Cuyahoga County Public Library will revert to curbside/drive-through service. Branch hours of operation will remain the same and virtual programs will continue as scheduled."
The news comes as Ohio reported nearly 21,000 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, a two-day total after the Christmas holiday. This mirrors a nationwide upwards trend in coronavirus cases as the omicron variant, first detected in South Africa, continues to rage.
Library officials did not announce an anticipated return to normal date.
The Cuyahoga County institution isn't alone in its decision to change operating procedures; recently, Cleveland Clinic and other major area hospitals have canceled elective and non-emergent procedures as the coronavirus cases rise, filling up hospital beds.
