CLEVELAND — More changes are coming within the troubled Cuyahoga County Jail.
Cuyahoga County Jail Warden Jeremy Everett has resigned from his post after serving for just six weeks. In a resignation e-mail sent to Cuyahoga County Sheriff Harold Pretel on Monday, Everett said he was surprised to be informed by Cuyahoga County Jail Chief Dale Soltis that he was being asked to resign.
"Chief Soltis indicated to me that he was told it had nothing to do with my performance during my tenure but that the county is 'changing directions,'" Everett wrote. "I know that you reiterated that this had nothing to do with my performance and that the county was changing directions when you called me Saturday night."
Everett was sworn in as Cuyahoga County warden on Sept. 11. County officials tell 3News that Everett's duties will be carried out by a warden currently assigned to the jail.
Before coming to Cuyahoga County, Everett served as an operations manager for the Ohio Department of Youth Services. Everett also previously spent 21 years as a member of the Tuscarawas County Sheriff's Office, the last six as a correctional administrator.
Everett's departure comes as the county looks to get stability inside its jail. Three inmates have died this year, the most recent on Oct. 8. Previously, the facility was at the center of a massive scandal involving alleged corruption and mistreatment of inmates. Several former Cuyahoga County corrections officers were convicted and sentenced to prison. A scathing report from the U.S. Marshals service was followed by a failed state inspection. In addition, numerous lawsuits were filed alleging abuse by guards or poor conditions of the jail led to inmate deaths.
"It will be interesting to see what the 'different direction' brings," Everett added in his resignation letter.
