EAST CLEVELAND -- The debris that populated an East Cleveland dump site, leading to complaints from residents and legislation from leaders, has been cleared, according to state Sen. Kenny Yuko.
The Noble Road landfill was originally established by Arco Recycling as a site for construction debris. Last January, the EPA shut down the site after an estimated two million yards of waste and debris piled up. Arco appealed an EPA order to have the site cleaned in two weeks.
In November, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department and Ohio Attorney General's office executed a search warrant ar Red Rock Services, LLC, a company owned by Arco Recycling owner George Michael Riley. That raid occurred just days after the landfill caught fire.
According to Yuko, the debris pile has been removed and crews are scraping the site to remove remaining residue.
The state Controlling Board in January approved $3.25 million to clean up the site and the EPA received $6 million.
Residents near the landfill have long made complaints about the dump, noting foul odors in the summer, but the EPA deemed the air quality safe.
