Suspect in death of Euclid police officer Jacob Derbin died from self-inflicted gunshot wound: Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's report

Authorities said Deshawn Vaughn was found dead Sunday at a residence on Van Aken Boulevard in Shaker Heights following an hourslong standoff.

SHAKER HEIGHTS, Ohio — The suspect in the deadly shooting of Euclid Police Officer Jacob Derbin -- identified as 24-year-old Deshawn Vaughn -- died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to new information released Tuesday from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Authorities had previously reported that Vaughn was found dead Sunday at a residence in the 16100 block of Van Aken Boulevard in Shaker Heights following an hourslong standoff with police.

A Blue Alert was issued over the weekend as authorities searched for Vaughn after Derbin was shot and killed while responding to an aggravated menacing report on East 211th Street around 9:56 p.m. Saturday.

“The complainant stated that her child’s father threatened to harm her and her mother,” Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer explained during a press conference Sunday night. “Officers arrived and spoke to the complainant who stated that the suspect was on foot and possibly nearby. Officers went to check the back yard and were ambushed by gunfire from the suspect.”

Meyer said officers returned fire, but Vaughn fled the scene on foot. Officer Derbin was shot and succumbed to his injuries.

The manhunt for Vaughn then began, with authorities eventually tracing his whereabouts to Shaker Heights. Officials say he was armed, and 3News has since confirmed the home belonged to his girlfriend.

As law enforcement attempted to make contact with Vaughn, radio traffic obtained by WKYC indicates at least one gunshot was fired. Police then ordered the area to be evacuated, with the library cleared and incoming RTA trains also halted.

"More and more vehicles piled up here," resident Ricky Scullark said of the ongoing commotion. "It was about 30 [police] vehicles over here."

Some feared for their safety, thinking they might be caught in a crossfire. SWAT officers eventually gained entry and located Vaughn's body.
