VALLEY VIEW -- The five dogs from the Cuyahoga County Animal Shelter that died during the last three weeks came from the city kennel, a shelter spokesperson confirmed Friday.
The shelter remains closed and staff hope to finish cleaning today. Employees will determine Friday afternoon if the shelter will reopen Saturday.
Five dogs that passed through the shelter died between May 22 and June 3. All five were received from the city kennel.
The first dog arrived at the kennel May 10 and died May 22. The second dog arrived May 14 and died May 24. The third arrived May 16 and died May 22 while the fourth also arrived May 16 and died May 31. The fifth dog arrived May 24 and died at the shelter June 3.
A city of Cleveland spokesperson said the city kennel has been working with the shelter since the dogs died. The spokesperson said the kennel has stepped up its cleaning process in its building and trucks.
The city also noted that no dogs have died at the kennel, which remains open.
The shelter is still awaiting test results to determine how the dogs died, though employees believe it was a respiratory illness. The facility will remain closed until results are confirmed.
