6 displaced after car slams into house in University Heights; driver charged with failure to control vehicle

The driver of the car was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The six residents were cleared of injuries and accommodated at a hotel.

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — Six people were displaced but unharmed and a driver suffered minor injuries after a car slammed into a house in University Heights Saturday night, fire officials said.

Captain John Novosielski of the University Heights Fire Department said dispatchers received a call about the incident at about 10:08 p.m. When fire department personnel responded to the home at the intersection of Silsby Road and South Green Road, the driver was sitting on the sidewalk with non-life-threatening injuries. He was transported to an area hospital.

Police say the driver, identified as 23-year-old Tayvaun Robinson, was charged with failure to control a vehicle.

Investigators believe that Robinson was speeding when he got distracted, hit a curb, then drove off South Green Road into a house. Police add that they did not test for any drugs or alcohol.

The six residents of the house were checked and cleared of any injuries and are being accommodated at a hotel. They were on the opposite side of the house when the car made impact, Novosielski said.

Novosielski said the house, which is owned by Jewish Family Services, sustained "substantial" structural damage and was rendered "unstable" by the crash. The Eastside Technical Rescue Team provided assistance on site, installing three shoring posts to keep the house upright.

Novosielski said the driver of the car told firefighters he estimated he was driving about 40 mph before he lost control and clipped the curb and slammed into the brick facade.

The fire captain said the residents were escorted back into the house to retrieve items like medication and clothing, and were provided assistance by members of their community.

"Luckily the people live on the other side of the house and .. the community came together and they're willing to help out and whatever they need they were pitching in for the residents," Novosielski said.
