EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Some parents are tired of waiting for the city of East Cleveland to fix oversized potholes outside Superior Elementary, so they are uniting in hopes of bringing a much needed change to keep everyone safe.
Garfield and Lambert are the only roads in and out of Superior Elementary and they're littered with gaping potholes.
Some are 5 inches deep and one is even called "The Lake," because it fills with water.
Shanelle Moore fell in it a couple of weeks ago.
"Trying to avoid the potholes, it was raining that day, stepped in one, twisted my ankle," said Moore.
Moore and other parents want the city to do something to make this street safer.
"When you see something like this it's a 911 emergency. We need some emergency work down on this street," said Juanita Gowdy.
FOLLOW-UP (9/28): Pothole problem persists outside local school
"When you drive down some streets, you can see where some streets were repaired and others aren't, and this is one that hasn't been repaired," said parent Tonja Keller.
"You can barely get around here, even the school buses. The ditches and potholes are ridiculous," said parent Karmeka Jones.
Parents say the city has patched the potholes, but then winter hits and by springtime the potholes are back.
"It don't make no sense. They come around and put tar in and patch them down and when it tears up it gets bigger, so it's not improving anything," said parent Tynisha Atwater.
So parents are standing together to demand that the street gets fixed, and they won't back down until something is done so no one else gets hurt.
"Tear it up and redo the whole thing," said Moore.
Parents say they are going to continue to press the mayor and City Council for the change.
They know the budget is tight, but they say the safety of children should be a priority.
We tried reaching out to the mayor Tuesday evening, but his cell phone wasn't accepting any calls.
