EUCLID, Ohio — "Jacob embodied the spirit of an officer and a soldier."
That is how Euclid City Council members are remembering fallen police officer Jacob Derbin, who was killed in the line of duty earlier this month at just 23 years old.
On Monday night, the Euclid City Council introduced and passed a ceremonial resolution honoring Derbin's life — just two days after he was laid to rest during an emotional funeral service.
The resolution to honor and recognize Derbin says the following: "Every day, police officers pin on their shields and walk out the door, rushing into harm’s way to keep the rest of us safe. Being a police officer is more than what they do, it is who they are. Jacob embodied the spirit of an officer and a soldier. The City of Euclid is grateful and holds dear the memory of Jacob."
The full resolution can be seen below:
Derbin joined the Euclid police force less than a year ago, following in the footsteps of his father, who also works as an officer with the department. The Cuyahoga Heights High School graduate dedicated his life to public service and also served in the Army reserves.
The deadly shooting happened on Saturday, May 10, after officers were dispatched to East 211th Street for an aggravated menacing report.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers went to check the backyard and were ambushed by gunfire from the suspect. Officer Derbin was shot and died as a result of his injuries.
Officers returned fire at the suspect, 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn, but he fled the scene on foot. On Sunday, May 11, Vaughn was involved in an hours-long standoff in Shaker Heights, where he later died.
