EUCLID, Ohio — Euclid Police officers shot an aggressive dog on Monday during a kidnapping investigation.
Officials say it happened when the Euclid Police Department was assisting the Cleveland Police Department with an investigation of a reported kidnapping of a 35-year-old woman.
During the investigation, Euclid Police went to the victim's mother's home on Crystal Avenue at around 11 p.m. when they encountered an "aggressive" 80-pound mixed-breed dog, who charged at them from inside the residence.
The dog allegedly chased officers across the driveway, into the neighbor's front yard, which led to two officers shooting at the dog. The dog, which was struck three times, was taken to a local animal hospital by additional officers.
Police say due to the dog's "severe injuries," hospital staff euthanized the dog at the owner's request.
One of the officers involved was taken to a local hospital for injuries and is currently on medical leave from the department.
"This is a very sad and unfortunate incident. The Euclid Police Department deeply values life. Euclid Officers work closely with the Euclid Animal Shelter and volunteers of Euclid Pet Pals to provide safety and shelter to hundreds of animals each year," said Euclid Police officials.
The Euclid Police Department shared the information on Facebook on Saturday, with hopes of being transparent with Euclid residents.
"Transparency is a core value of the Euclid Police Department. We strive to gain and maintain the trust of the residents of the community we proudly serve."
