CLEVELAND (AP) - Authorities say an inmate who tried to kill himself at the county jail in Cleveland has died, marking the system's eighth inmate death in 2018.
It comes after a U.S. Marshals review found inhumane conditions at the Cuyahoga County jail and several inmates filed a lawsuit alleging it's intentionally overcrowded and unsafe for people held there.
The jail's director abruptly resigned after the marshals' report. Administrators vowed to make changes.
The inmate who died Sunday at a hospital was 27-year-old Brenden Kiekisz.
According to reports, related records show he'd suffered from mental illness, including depression, and was jailed for allegedly violating a drug intervention program. The site reports he was held in an area where one jail officer watches about 100 inmates.
Corrections officers have filed grievances about such arrangements.
