Cleveland television reporter wounded in Lakewood shooting, suspected shooter dead

WOIO 19 News is reporting that their reporter Winnie Dortch was the woman who was wounded in the shooting and hospitalized.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — Lakewood police are investigating after a man allegedly shot a woman before killing himself on Monday morning.

WOIO 19 News is reporting that their reporter Winnie Dortch was the woman who was wounded in the shooting and hospitalized.

According to police, they received a call at around 7:54 a.m. for two people arguing on Chase Avenue between Merl Avenue and Clifton Boulevard.

Upon arriving at the scene, police found a dead man on the sidewalk and a woman with a gunshot wound.

Police have identified the deceased man as 34-year-old Bryant Carter of Bedford.

Lakewood Police Captain Gary Stone said they believe Carter and killed himself after shooting the woman.

In addition, a priest from St. Luke the Evangelist told 3News that the two people involved were associated with the Clifton Early Learning Center, which has closed for the day due to the shooting.

Lakewood Fire Department personnel administered first aid to Dortch, who was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center. Police say her wounds "are considered serious."

At this time, it is unclear what led up to the shooting. Officials noted that the individuals involved knew each other.

3News spoke with Father Kevin Elbert of St. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church. He explained that Clifton Early Learning Center is a tenant of their church.

He said the people involved with the shooting are associated with the childcare center, and because of what happened this morning, the center closed for the day.

"Its a tragedy," he said. "This is so close to home. This is a tragic event. Any loss of life is a tragic event, especially in a place that's holy ground."
