Mayfield Heights police searching for driver who nearly hit pedestrian, crashed into school crossing sign

The woman and her dog were in the crosswalk while an SUV was heading in her direction while driving on a tree lawn. She jumped to avoid being hit.

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Police in Mayfield Heights are asking for the public's help in tracking down a driver who was involved in a hit skip incident on Wednesday.

According to the Mayfield Heights Police Department's Facebook page, the incident took place at around 4:45 p.m. Officers say a woman was in the crosswalk with her dog in front of Lander Elementary School. 

As she looked north, the woman saw an SUV heading southbound in her direction while driving on the tree lawn. As she jumped out of the way, the SUV struck a school crossing sign. Police say school was not in session when the incident occurred. 

Police believe the vehicle show in its post below is the SUV involved in the incident. It has previous damage on its right rear quarter panel. Additionally, the vehicle's running board on the right side was ripped off and found at the scene, along with the SUV's front bumper. The SUV appears to be gold-colored.
