EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio — Police in East Cleveland shot and killed a 19-year-old suspect on Tuesday.
Officers pursued a stolen vehicle Tuesday morning by Alder Avenue. Police say three people were in the car, including two men and a woman.
The vehicle struck several fixed objects before catching fire, police said in a press release. The three inside the vehicle jumped out and fled on Allandale Avenue. The two passengers went west toward Euclid Avenue, while the driver ran behind homes and over a fence to the Apex Academy.
East Cleveland Police Chief Scott Gardner said that officers called out several times on the radio that the male had a firearm and produced it. Officers fired an unknown amount of shots towards the suspect, striking him an unknown amount of times.
East Cleveland EMS transported the man to University Hospitals where he was rushed to surgery and later died. He was identified as 18-year-old Vincent Belmonte of Cleveland, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday morning.
Ohio Attorney General's Office Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation was contacted and will take over the investigation.
