PARMA, Ohio — High heat is expected to make its way into Northeast Ohio in the coming days, and the Parma Fire Department wants to remind parents and pet owners to take precautions to keep their loved ones safe.
Robert Bures of Parma Fire spoke with 3News and knows it's all about planning ahead when you are dealing with the high afternoon sun, "If you are going to take your kids out, if you are going to plan any outdoors activities like exercise or gardening, try to plan to times accordingly."
Wednesday will likely mark the only the second day of 2023 where temperatures in Northeast Ohio reach into the 90s. While the summer in Northeast Ohio has been mild, it has been anything but across the country. Sea surface temperatures in the Florida Keys hit a record 101 degrees recently and temps exceeding 110 degrees have caused several deaths in the southwest region of the country.
With the mild summer we've experience in Northeast Ohio has been a welcome change from the sweltering, high humidity dog days we've grown accustomed to, Parma Fire urges not to let that breed complacency when making sure you are ready for the heat. Whether that's buying supplies like bottled water, sunscreen, or ice days before the demand reaches its highest, or making sure your air conditioning is in working order.
We may take those steps for granted, but the reality of being unprepared for the dangers of extreme heat can have profound consequences.
